When we began working together in 1991, little did we know it was the start of a long, rewarding journey.
Nor did we realise that we had each found our travelling companion: still discussing, reflecting and evolving our ideas about young children more than twenty years later.
We have established two centres together—Deakin and The Park Schools for Early Learning—where we continue to be challenged to find better ways of travelling this path.
We have discovered that theories of age and development may well confine children. By reflecting on our practice—by being open to seeing—children show us they are more competent and capable than we have imagined. This challenges teachers everywhere to put aside their developmental expectations and see each child’s individual journey of learning.
At Deakin and The Park we aim to honour each individual and unlock their potential.
Like all travellers we made notes, took images and marked the map to remember our way. These will be part of a new book for release by 2012. In its pages we invite you to come on A Walk in the Park with us.
